For this elegant bathroom remodel, which earned a 2014 NARI Central Virginia CotY Award, our goal was to create a luxurious, welcoming retreat inspired by the charm of an English garden. The result is a space that feels refined and relaxing, filled with thoughtful details that make everyday routines feel just a bit more special.
One of the first challenges we addressed during this bathroom remodel was the home’s extremely high vaulted ceiling. While it looked dramatic, it wasn’t very practical. Heat and humidity would rise and get trapped far above the usable space, making the room less comfortable. To fix this, we capped the ceiling at about 9½ to 10 feet, which still feels open and spacious while significantly improving comfort and efficiency.
A Two-Part Bathroom Remodel with a Spa-Like Layout
Instead of one single space, we designed a two-part bathroom suite. The main bathroom area features a large walk-in shower, a beautiful vanity, the toilet area, and access to the soaking tub. Just across the landing, we created a separate dressing room and closet space. We moved the bathroom door to the stair landing, which helps separate the bathroom from the bedroom and improves the overall flow of the space. This setup gives the homeowners room to get ready without crowding while also making the entire suite feel more luxurious and functional.
A Spacious Shower That Steals the Show
The shower is easily one of the most impressive features of this bathroom remodel. In fact, when the homeowner was showing off the space, they managed to fit eight people inside the shower at once—it’s that large.

- A convenient hand shower
- A stylish grab bar that blends into the design
Garden-Inspired Details Throughout the Bathroom Remodel
To lean into the inspiration of a beautiful English garden for this bathroom remodel, every design choice was curated to evoke the feeling of a stroll down a garden path:
- Flagstone-Inspired Flooring: The floor tile was specifically chosen to mimic the flagstone pavers found in traditional garden paths.
- Botanical Lighting: A centerpiece chandelier featuring intricate floral details, a signature piece from Crystorama, serves as the room’s crown jewel.
- Garden Motifs: From the ellipses in the decorative glasswork to the specialized shower door handle, every detail points back to formal garden architecture.
Bathroom Remodel Essentials: Storage, Lighting, and Design
In this bathroom remodel, we added a tall display cabinet that allows the homeowner to showcase special pieces, while implementing smart storage features like three pull-out drawers that make everyday items easy to access.
Lastly, we added a small yet innovative detail; a clever LED night light trick above the toilet paper holder that provides just enough soft light to navigate the room at night without turning on bright overhead lights.
