Bathroom Remodel Before and After: How a Complete Layout Flip Changes Everything

By Virginia Design Group
When a cosmetic update isn’t enough, it’s time to rewrite the footprint. For this dramatic transformation, we took a master bathroom with an awkward, closed-in layout and shifted almost every major fixture to double the usable space. See how trading a clunky corner tub for a spacious walk-in shower—complete with custom Mouser Cabinetry, deep earth tones, and a sleek solar tube skylight—created a true spa-like sanctuary. Bathroom Remodel Before and After: How a Complete Layout Flip Changes Everything

Some home renovations require a little bit of cosmetic updating, but others demand a complete reimagining of the footprint. For this project, we took a cramped, awkwardly arranged master bath and completely flipped the layout to maximize both space and luxury. The original setup featured a tiny shower and an oversized tub that jutted out into the room, while the vanity crowded the entry. By shifting almost every major fixture, we delivered a high-end bathroom remodel that feels twice its original size.

Bathroom Remodel with Improved Layout and Natural Light

Aside from the toilet, absolutely nothing remained in its original position during this extensive bathroom remodel. We relocated the spacious new walk-in shower to the exact wall where the old vanity used to sit. Where the cramped shower once stood, we installed an expansive double vanity complete with a central drawer base for optimized storage.

To create a clean sightline, we rebuilt the knee wall situated between the new shower and the toilet area. This structural wall was outfitted with a long, recessed storage niche, keeping daily essentials tucked away but easily accessible. Finally, we removed a clunky window and replaced it with a sleek solar tube skylight, flooding the room with beautiful, natural light without sacrificing wall space or privacy.

Rich Textures and Earthy, Deep Tones

Our clients preferred a palette of deeper, richer colors that evoke a cozy, spa-like atmosphere. The foundation of the design for this bathroom remodel relies on gorgeous and rich materials:

  • Mouser Cabinetry: The stunning vanities feature Quarter Sawn Oak cabinets in a deep finish, showcasing a beautiful, high-end grain pattern.
  • Absolute Black Honed Granite: These sophisticated, matte-finish countertops add a dramatic contrast to the warm wood tones.
  • Morris Tile Selections: All of the elegant tilework was sourced from Morris Tile, featuring a creative integration of natural pebbles along the shower floor and walls that gives the space a distinct, earth-toned texture.

High-Performance Fixtures: Blending Luxury and Functionality

To match the premium cabinetry and stone, we selected top-tier plumbing fixtures. The double vanity features pristine under-mount Kohler sinks, while the shower is outfitted with contemporary components from the Delta Tesla Collection. For the ultimate luxury touch, we topped the shower space with a high-performance Hadco rain shower head for a true downpour experience.

Of course, no project reveal is complete without mentioning the home’s most important resident: Remi the Wonder Dog! Rescued from the streets of New Orleans, this brave pup gave his official stamp of approval to the new fixtures and open layout.
