Small Space, Big Freedom: A Waterproof Wet Room Bathroom Remodel

For this bathroom project in the Windsor Farms neighborhood, we took a tiny basement bath and completely transformed it. Before the renovation, the space was weighed down by a dated aesthetic: dark hunter green wall and floor tile, a cream-colored border featuring woodland animals, and an awkward 30×30 corner shower that protruded into the room.

Because the homeowner experiences mobility issues in tight spaces, our primary mission was to open up the footprint, maximize user-friendliness, and create a seamless flow. We achieved this by turning the entire space into a fully waterproofed wet room.

Curbless Shower Design in This Bathroom Remodel

To eliminate the restrictive barriers of a traditional shower enclosure, we took a radical approach for this bathroom remodel. We jackhammered up the original concrete basement floor and poured a brand-new slab two inches lower than before. This structural shift allowed us to pitch the floor perfectly, creating a subtle slope and curve that stops water right at the main entry door.

Instead of a bulky center drain, we installed a sleek channel drain along the back shower wall. This allows the water to sweep away effortlessly, leaving a completely flush, open floor plan that is incredibly easy to navigate.

The Impervious Wet Room: A Waterproof Bathroom Remodel

In a true wet room layout, almost every single surface needs to be completely impervious to water. For this bathroom remodel, we fully tiled all of the walls and the ceiling, meaning the entire room can handle a direct spray without any risk of water damage.

Our material selections were carefully chosen to keep the space bright and visually expansive:

  • Biscuit Color Palette: We utilized a warm white (biscuit) shade for the wall tile, toilet, and classic pedestal sink to reflect light and instantly bounce it around the windowless basement space.
  • Striated Flooring: The floor tile features a distinct striated pattern. By running this tile continuously across the floor and straight up the main shower wall, we created a clever optical illusion that elongates the room.
  • Teak Cabinetry: For storage, we installed a custom cabinet over the toilet made of natural teak wood, a material naturally rich in protective oils that can get wet without warping.
  • Waterproof PVC Storage Door: The hidden door leading to the storage space under the basement stairs was custom-built from durable, waterproof PVC.

Bathroom Remodel with Luxury Multi-Head Shower System

To protect the main entry door from getting splashed, we anchored a clean, fixed glass panel to divide the wet zone from the dry zone. Behind the glass sits a luxury triple-threat shower setup: a standard shower head, a relaxing ceiling-mounted rain shower head, and a flexible handheld sprayer.

For safety and accessibility, we stacked the plumbing valves directly above a heavy-duty grab bar. The control design is beautifully simple for anyone to operate: the bottom valve controls the water temperature and volume, while the top actuator handles a 6-setting diverter. With a quick turn, the homeowner can activate each shower head individually or create a custom combination for the ultimate spa experience.
