A Hillcrest Transformation: The Ultimate Kitchen Remodel for Creativity and Function

Nestled in the Hillcrest neighborhood off Cary Street, this mid-century ranch was a hidden gem with a layout that no longer met the needs of a modern, active family. While the property eventually underwent a larger addition, the journey toward a more functional home began with a complete kitchen remodel designed to balance high-end culinary performance with a unique need for creative workspace.

The 10-Foot Walnut Island: A Kitchen Remodel Centerpiece

The original kitchen featured a peninsula extending from the oven, limiting movement and cutting off the room visually. With an active family deeply involved in school activities, church events, and costume-making for pageants and productions, the existing kitchen table simply wasn’t enough to support the homeowner’s creative projects.

The centerpiece of this custom kitchen renovation became a breathtaking 10-foot walnut island, designed for cooking and entertaining as well as a dedicated workspace for sewing, fabric cutting, and crafting. The large island instantly opened the room, creating better circulation while giving the family a multifunctional centerpiece.

The island features elegant granite countertops and ample seating, allowing the family to gather while the costume magic happens nearby.

Glass Accents and Classic Elegance in a Kitchen Remodel

To balance the warmth of the walnut island, we utilized Crystal Cabinetry for the perimeter storage. The crisp, white furniture-grade cabinets extend to the ceiling, maximizing storage for a busy household.

The technical specs of this kitchen are equally impressive:

  • Sub-Zero Refrigeration: A large, professional-grade Sub-Zero refrigerator is seamlessly integrated into the cabinetry wall.
  • Wolf Appliances: A high-performance Wolf range serves as the culinary anchor of the room.
  • Specialty Details: A custom mosaic tile backsplash adds a Mediterranean-inspired focal point behind the range, while a built-in wine refrigerator ensures the space is ready for entertaining.
  • Glass Accents: Upper cabinets feature intricate glass door inserts, perfect for displaying fine glassware and adding a touch of classic elegance.

Holistic Design: Beyond the Kitchen Counter

To ensure the kitchen remodel felt like a natural extension of the living space, we carried the walnut theme throughout the room. We designed a matching walnut fireplace mantle for the home’s original brick fireplace and installed custom walnut bookcases and an entertainment center to house the TV.

Against the bold, vibrant red accent walls, these natural wood elements pop, creating a space that feels both high-end and deeply personal.
