A Richmond Kitchen Reimagined: Turning a Structural Crisis into a Functional Masterpiece

A kitchen renovation in Richmond is a significant investment, but for these Richmond homeowners, the journey began with an urgent necessity. After a major water leak left their kitchen gutted, they turned to Jennifer Duncan and Virginia Design Group to transform a disaster into a sophisticated, high-performance space.

The resulting design is a masterclass in purposeful kitchen renovation, solving deep-seated structural issues while creating a bright, open-concept floor plan tailored to the family’s daily rhythm.

Correcting Hanging Architecture: The Picture Window Rescue

One of the most critical phases of this kitchen renovation involved fixing a dangerous DIY-legacy from a previous owner. A bay window, installed years prior, was found to be hanging off the side of the house and was not installed to code.

To ensure safety and elevate the aesthetic, we:

  • Removed the unstable bay window.
  • Installed a large-scale picture window that centers the room and floods the workspace with natural light.
  • Opened the floor plan by removing the structural wall between the kitchen and the dining room, creating a seamless flow for entertaining.

The Integrated Entry: Sophistication Meets Utility for this Kitchen renovation

A primary request for this kitchen renovation was to create a functional transition space for entering through the back door. They needed a place to sit and remove shoes without compromising the “class” of a designer kitchen.

Rather than a cluttered mudroom, we utilized Entry-Integrated Design:

  • Strategic Space Planning: We reclaimed 18 inches of depth by shifting a wall back into the space of an old water heater closet and a portion of the powder room.
  • Multifunctional Island Seating: The back of the expansive island now features custom-integrated bench seating, providing the utility of a mudroom with the elegance of a custom kitchen.
  • Concealed Storage: What was once a cramped closet is now a floor-to-ceiling custom pantry, providing streamlined storage that blends into the cabinetry.

Custom Finishes: Nantucket Blue & Timeless White

The color palette was chosen to feel both expansive and grounded. We utilized premium Mouser Cabinetry throughout the project to maximize storage and durability.

The Cabinetry Details

  • The Focal Point: The central island is finished in Nantucket Blue, a rich, sophisticated tone that anchors the large room.
  • The Perimeter: We chose a White finish with a Pewter Glaze, adding subtle depth and a classic Virginia feel to the frameless cabinets.
  • The Surfaces: High-end Antolini Bianco Macauba countertops provide a durable, natural stone work surface that complements the cool tones of the room.

Designer Hardware & Textures

  • Backsplash: We installed Sonoma Bohdi Vahara silk glass tile from Morris Tile, creating a soft, reflective texture against the white perimeter.
  • Fixtures: The kitchen features professional-grade Brizo faucets and Lanova sinks.
  • Lighting: In the dining area, an Ophelia and Co. Kaycie 6-light lantern chandelier adds a geometric, modern touch to the traditional architecture.

Designed for the Modern Host

Because this home was designed for gathering, we included high-end host-ready features that make entertaining effortless.

A standout feature is the warming drawer located at the dining-room end of the island. This allows the homeowners to keep dinner plates warm or hold side dishes at temperature while guests are seated just steps away.
